Patient Information and FAQs

Like the age-old idiom says, “Prevention is better than a cure.” We recommend scheduling appointments every 6 months; this means you’ll require less invasive treatments (think more maintenance, and less repair)! This will also allow us to spot any issues that may pop up much more easily thereby making your entire treatment plan much easier.

How often should I get my teeth cleaned or checked?
Attending regular checkups will help to keep your gums and teeth healthy as well as detect any early problems such as gum disease, oral cancer and cavities. The best way to maintain good oral health is to visit your dentist/ hygienist every 6 months. Factors such as periodontal and gum disease, poor oral hygiene and certain medical conditions are what the dentist or hygienist takes into consideration when deciding how often you need your dental cleaning and check up. We say that Prevention is better than cure. By attending the recommended 6 months, you will need less treatment and your dentist will spot any problems earlier, making any treatment easier.
When should my child come in for their first appointment?
A child should have his first dental appointment no later than his third birthday. Many dentists recommend a child have his first appointment when his first tooth comes in.
What can I do about sensitive teeth?
Sensitivity toothpaste contains strontium chloride or potassium nitrate (both of which are very effective in treating sensitive teeth). After a few weeks of use, you may notice a decrease in sensitivity. Highly acidic foods such as oranges, grapefruits and lemons, as well as tea and soda can increase tooth sensitivity and work against sensitivity toothpaste. If you do not get relief by brushing gently and using desensitizing toothpaste, see your dentist. There are special compounds that can be applied in-office to the roots of your tooth to reduce – if not eliminate – the sensitivity. High-fluoride containing home care products can also be recommended to help reduce tooth sensitivity.
What should I do about bleeding gums?
People often respond to bleeding gums with the wrong method of treatment. Usually, gums that bleed are a symptom of the onset of periodontal disease or gingivitis. However, people stop brushing as frequently and effectively because it may be painful or it may cause the gums to bleed again. When gums are inflamed, brushing could help reduce the inflammation. More importantly, you should see your dentist as soon as possible if your gums begin to bleed.
